A new information point has been launched at the University by the European Documentation Centre. With this service, the European Union primarily targets the university community: students and researchers now have direct access to EU documents, offering valuable resources for both academic studies and scientific research. Staff at the university library are available to assist those interested, and librarians have received dedicated training to support this new service. Importantly, the European Documentation Centre is also open to the general public in Veszprém.
Through these documentation centres, the EU expands the ways in which European citizens can connect personally with the union. The European Commission Representation in Hungary, the Europe Direct offices, and the European Documentation Centres together offer three distinct service packages to citizens.
This was highlighted by Gábor Zupkó, Head of the European Commission Representation in Hungary, during the centre’s opening event on Wednesday. He emphasized that the European Union is not just in Brussels, but present locally. Reflecting on Hungary’s 21 years of EU membership, he noted that all citizens benefit from being part of the Union. As a member, Hungary has significantly more influence on global affairs than it would as a medium-sized independent country. Zupkó also stressed that “Brussels” is not some distant, foreign entity: “We decide, we elect those who represent us and make decisions there.”
From the host institution, Chancellor Zsolt Csillag gave a speech, recalling that the European Documentation Centre network was established in 1963 and today includes around 400 centres across Europe. In Veszprém, the service is integrated into the structure of the university library — a fitting place, given its role as one of the city's key sources of reliable information.
