Science Has Never Been More Needed

The Technical Chemistry Days is a long-standing, multi-day conference series, which this year opens its doors for the 53rd time in the service of science. On Tuesday, at the opening ceremony of the conference, the first speech was given by János Abonyi, Rector of the University ֱ, who remarked that it is rare to encounter a series of events so capable of continuous renewal. He believes that the Technical Chemistry Days is not just an event, but a tradition, a professional community, a scientific culture, and an intellectual legacy that has been shaped and enriched by multiple generations – a foundation on which we too can confidently build.

The conference not only responds to the world’s challenges, but also helps shape them. Rector Abonyi added that he was especially pleased by the fact that the conference functions as an open community: half of the presenters come from partner institutions, which strengthens dialogue, and many young researchers are also participating in the program. Once again, the Faculty of Engineering supports the event with full commitment. Finally, he gave special thanks to Katalin Bélafiné Bakó and Mónika Klein for their work.

Áron Kovács, a local government representative, also spoke at the opening event. He believes that the relationship between the city and the university is exemplary and has become almost second nature. He expressed pride in the cultural and educational activity taking place within the university’s walls.

He reflected on our strange and contradictory times, noting that we talk more about sustainability than ever before, yet the goals we’ve set in this regard seem increasingly out of reach. We know more about the world today than ever before, and yet the future has never felt more uncertain. Never has there been such a need for the calm, reasoned answers that science can provide. And indeed, it is science that can offer answers for the future – which is why scientific conferences like this one are more necessary than ever, he concluded.
