The University ֱ is committed to enhancing its international competitiveness in both education and research. As part of this effort, it aims to provide 21st-century infrastructure for students and faculty across all its campuses. A major step in this direction is being supported by the project titled “Practice-Oriented Infrastructure and Skills Development Reform of the University ֱ” (Project ID: RRF-2.1.2-21-2022-00007), implemented under the Széchenyi Plan Plus program. The total funding for the project amounts to HUF 4 billion, with HUF 1.3 billion allocated to the current infrastructure development.
One of the key goals of the project is to expand the educational and research portfolio of the Soós Ernő Research and Development Center, which operates as part of the university's Circular Economy Center.
As a first step, the university has acquired a nearly 4,000 m² property located at 8 Vár Street in Nagykanizsa. The development, which includes comprehensive energy efficiency and interior modernization works, began with the site handover in February 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2026. At a press conference held on Thursday, the university presented the details of the energy investment and the academic objectives to be achieved through the project.
Dr. Renáta Berta Gerencsérné, Director General, highlighted that the ongoing renovation will result in a modern, innovative educational and research center in Nagykanizsa that will foster scientific progress and talent development alike. The new unit will support cutting-edge water technology research and related analytical measurements. A unique feature of the facility will be a specially designed, low-plastic laboratory for the study of microplastics. In addition to water research, renewable energy-related developments will also play a key role. The building will accommodate the installation and testing of experimental systems, known as pilot units. A separate building section will be dedicated to nurturing young talents, providing a modern and inspiring laboratory environment for primary and secondary school students.
Development in Nagykanizsa fits perfectly into this shared vision, as it will create modern educational and research spaces that offer world-class support for the circular economy – particularly Hungary’s water industry.
Réka Bodó, Deputy Chancellor of the University ֱ, emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of the investment. It is the largest development since the campus was founded 25 years ago, significantly expanding the university's educational and research capacity in the city and the region. "More importantly," she added, "it sends a clear message from the University ֱ: we are thinking long-term, enhancing our educational and innovation capabilities, and we want to be an active contributor to regional economic development."
Jácint Horváth, Mayor of Nagykanizsa, underlined that cities and regions – including Nagykanizsa – can only succeed if they possess research, development, and innovation capacity and can harness locally generated knowledge. University campuses are key forums for this. He noted that the Nagykanizsa campus is launching programs in knowledge areas that are deeply rooted in the city, including tourism and advanced research and education in water treatment and purification. The growing number of international and PhD students also supports globally integrated knowledge transfer. "The globally prominent principles of the circular economy and society have found a home within the University ֱ, which is essential for a sustainable future," he said.
Péter Cseresnyés, Member of Parliament, emphasized that the Nagykanizsa campus of the University ֱ plays an important role in regional higher education. This benefits students in Zala County, who can continue their studies locally without the burden of travel and higher costs. He also highlighted the over ten years of activity at the research center in Nagykanizsa, which not only contributes to education and research but also to the development and competitiveness of companies specializing in water treatment and softening.
